Niche Art Installation
From February 25, 2008 to February 1, 2009 | The Commons, Spooner Hall | A mixed media art installation by Marguerite Perret & Bruce Scherting in collaboration with Betsy Knabe Roe, Niche presents the images of the tree of life as a symbolic construct and as an illusion of natural selection. The result is reminiscent of a strange fairy tale where the beautiful and peculiar occupy the same space.
Time/Frame
From August 23, 2008 to December 14, 2008 | Spencer Museum of Art | In Fall 2008, the Spencer Museum of Art will consider the ways in which artists have pondered and pictured time. Assembling works from North and South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia, and across various media, the exhibition Time/Frame considers how time is manifested visually in art and material culture from around the world. Time/Frame is organized collectively by the 2007-08 Spencer Museum of Art graduate student interns: Robert Fucci, Shuyun Ho, Lauren Kernes, Lara Kuykendall, Ellen Raimond, and Stephanie Teasley.

Tuesday Concert Series
September 9, 2008 | Signs of Life Bookstore | Larry Carter, (improvisational piano or baritone cittern), the weekly opening act, performs and introduces the evening's guest artist/band. The fall "Tuesday Concert" series includes a blues/jazz duo, an alternative bluegrass band, original world music ensemble, traditional Swedish violin ensemble, Celtic/Appalachian music, an English Christmas special, and more.
Power, Place and People: African American & Indigenous Stories
From September 9, 2008 to September 19, 2008 | Lawarence Arts Center | Power, Place and People: African American & Indigenous Stories exhibition at the Lawrence Arts Center. Don’t miss the Haskell Intertribal Cultural Club Performance 7 p.m. September 12th , inside the Lawrence Arts Center Theatre. In addition, there is a panel discussion at the Lawrence Arts Center Gallery, 7 p.m. September 17th. Panelists: Dr. Daniel Wildcat, Haskell Indian Nations University Prof. Mike Tosee, Haskell Indian Nations University Dr. Maryemma Graham, University of Kansas Dr. James Leiker, Johnson County Community College :fineprint: Funded by the Ford Foundation and the Kansas Humanities Council, the Power, Place, and People: African American and Indigenous Stories exhibition visually illustrates the “Shifting Borders” project by featuring eight oral history interviews with African American, Indigenous, and mixed people discussing their concepts of their own identity, while placing their stories within the larger context of historical, social, and cultural themes.

Lecture: Laurie Anderson on "Homeland"
September 11, 2008 | Spencer Museum of Art | Laurie Anderson, who will perform "Homeland" at the Lied Center on Friday, Sept. 12, will speak about her reason behind the work, which is a response to her own thoughts and reactions to how the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks affected New York City and the United States at large. "Homeland" uses the synthetic language of technology and the sensuous language of songwriting and poetry to capture Anderson's compound reply. This event is co-sponsored with the Lied Center of Kansas.

September 12, 2008 | Lied Center | Critically acclaimed experimental performance artist; pioneer in the discipline. Invented several devices she has used in her recordings and performance art shows. HOMELAND is a multimedia response to Anderson’s own thoughts and reactions in post-Sept. 11 New York City. The work uses the synthetic language of technology and the sensuous language of song writing and poetry to capture Anderson’s compound reply.

Wendell Castle and Time/Frame Exhibition
From September 13, 2008 to December 14, 2008 | Spencer Museum of Art | Leading our look at time’s visual expression will be an exhibition featuring the work of American furniture artist and sculptor Wendell Castle, a KU alumnus. Wendell Castle: About Time will showcase five of his exquisite clocks in the museum’s Central Court. Overlooking the Castle exhibition in the North and South Balcony Galleries, Time/Frame will gather together globe-spanning art and material culture from the Spencer’s collection to consider how humans regard the enigma of time visually.

It Starts With Art! Children’s Art Appreciation Class
September 13, 2008 | Spencer Museum of Art | Turning Time: Using the Time/Frame exhibition as a starting point, students explore ways to depict time before designing and drawing their own time machine. This class is designed for students ages 5-14.
Ensemble Galilei with NPR's Neal Conan
September 13, 2008 | Lied Center | First Person: Stories from the Edge of the World. Unique performance examines personal experience of public accomplishment on a global level. Multimedia collaboration with narration by NPR’s Neal Conan, Celtic and evocative music by Ensemble Galilei and projections and footage of National Geographic Image Collection. Features Conan reading excerpts from the journals of celebrated explorers including Jacques Cousteau, George Mallory and Charles Darwin and writers such as Jim Harrison.
Lawrence Electronic Recycling Event
September 13, 2008 | Free State High School | The City of Lawrence invites residents and small businesses to recycle old, unwanted electronic equipment. Electronic equipment may contain hazardous components such as lead, mercury and cadmium. Recycling your unwanted electronic equipment keeps these hazardous components out of the landfill. Items accepted for recycling are computer monitors, desktops, laptops, keyboards, printers and other peripherals, televisions, copiers, scanners, telephones, cell phones, pagers, fax machines, VHS/DVD drives, and hand held devices. There is a recycling fee for computer monitors, $5 per monitor, and televisions, $15 per TV. There are no charges for other electronic equipment. There is also an optional on-site hard drive destruction available for $5 per hard drive. Fees may be paid by cash or check.
